Freebie of the week: Birdsong Giftbox

& here's the last freebie of Jinjerup's Bird themed pattern month!
I have never done up a navy gift blue box before and thought this would be a good chance to do so :) I quite like how the dark blue plays up the bright red, pink and orange tones of the chirpy birds. Hm... actually its more of plays up the 'raucousness' of the birds' songs! :P

Plucky ducky

I was going through some boxes of old knick knacks when I came across a very, old rubber ducky. Its still a shade of somewhat bright yellow, fancy that! (after all these years) Hence, I shall now call it 'plucky ducky'! Why do they still call them rubber duckies when most of them are now made of plastic? :P

& Come to think of it! I hardly ever remember playing with this toy! What on earth is it doing in my box of old keepsakes? It must be my sister's then, chuckle* guess they're trying to get rid of old stuff again by stashing it there.

As I sat there looking at the little toy, I thought, why not do up some duckies for a new Jinjerup Bird themed pattern :D So, thanks to plucky ducky, here's my take on this classic toy, in 3 shades of daffodil, lilac and cornflower.

Bird Song

Inspired by the raucously chirpy chorus I used to hear precisely at the stroke of dawn, here's my new pattern called Bird Song.

These 3 new patterns are very different from the other patterns in Jinjerup's Bird themed range as they look very contrasty and bold against these lovely dark colors of navy, mahogany and storm-grey. Thought it would be nice to feature them so, as it has been quite some time since I'd designed dark colored patterns. A change once in awhile is a good thing, yes? :P

Owl wait

Last night, as we were driving back home from our local super mart (dad & I), we saw this really huge flying creature swoop right infront of the car. Much too big to be a bat, too ruffly to be a night jar. We slowed down and watched where it landed.

It was a really huge owl, the size of a toy poodle! Would you believe it, this is only the third time in my entire life, I have seen an owl (apart from the ones in zoos!) :P It really inspired me to come up with this new pattern of cute, puffy owls in brilliant color swatches, wide-eyed and waiting.

Sweetweets

Time for a new bird themed pattern!
I had originally designed these little twitterers for an icon in mind but they looked really cute in repeat so I had to do them up in proper 'pattern' pattern.

The only thing they ever love doing is chirp to each other all over the place and in any direction possible. I adore the Sweetweets (warm) pattern the most, as the color combination makes them little birdies look more michievious than the other un's.

Freebie of the week: Owlways Yours Note cards

What a busy, busy weekend mine's turning out to be!
After happily spending more than 2 hours shooting pix of Jinjerup's Giftboxes,
I then realised I had shot them in the wrong resolution!! Argh!!

Now I've got to go reshoot them again, what a waste of my precious hours plus a small side project that I've been working on hasn't turned out the way I would've liked it to look. :( Guess I'm not having a very productive weekend too at that.

Oh well, the good thing is I've still got some more hours left. Before I go back to shooting pix, here's this week's freebie! Note cards in Jinjerup's latest pattern: Owlways Yours.

Owlways yours

Sorry folks for the lack of a post this week, have not been doing so great-healthwise.
Fever, exhaustion, the works but I'm back! ;)

I've been playing around with block owl repeats for the next pattern in line for Jinjerup's Bird range. This is actually my 2nd pattern featuring owls,
here's my first one. Instead of sticking to my fave color palettes, I decided to try out other color combinations as shown in the patterns below.

Freebie of the week: Mr & Mrs Byrd Invitation Cards

This week's freebie is a special one, as it features my favourite new pattern:
Mr & Mrs Byrd. I wanted to make a slightly different sort of card with the two little birds designed as intros to the contents inside so I whipped up these oh so cute Mr & Mrs Byrd Invitation cards!

These mini cards are so easy to make, with minimal folding and in such adorable colors too. Although I had designed them to be invite cards, they are great for any sort of message too, please do feel free to use them as note cards, mini greeting cards or just to say hi! :)

The Byrds say Hello!

A list of items you'll need to make the bookmark:
1. Paper (of a preferably thicker stock)
2. Printer
3. Scissors
4. Box cutter (blade)
5. Single Hole Punch (Optional)
6. Thin ribbon (Optional)

Here's a pictorial tutorial I've whipped up:

Have your materials at the ready!

Take note of the 2 different type of crop marks. The dotted line crop mark (boxed in yellow) are folding lines. The normal crop mark (boxed in pink) are cutting lines.

Locate the 8 dotted line crop marks then score them across from one end to the other with the back of your box cutter. You would have scored 4 lines, this helps ensuring smoother folding lines later.

Cut out the invite card along its normal crop marks.

Fold the scored lines as pictured above.

Fold the scored lines as pictured above.

Press the folds together.

Repeat the same folding and pressing actions for the other side of the invitation card.

When ready, this is what your invitation card shall look like.

Write your message inside! ;)

& you're good to go! Time to present them to your card recipients!

There are 2 other alternative ways you could present the cards.
Is your single hole punch ready? (If you do not have one, fret not! You could use a double hole punch, using only one of its hole punches OR you could even pierce the card with a needle and resize the hole as required.)

Alternative #1: Punch two holes as pictured above.

Thread a ribbon narrow enough to fit through the holes and make a mini bow! This looks really cute when its standing up by itself.

Alternative #2: Punch two holes as pictured above.

Thread a ribbon narrow enough to fit through the holes and make a knot, leaving excess ribbon there, long enough for you to tie it around a gift. Now the card serves as a gift tag too!

Mr & Mrs Byrd

When I was much younger, I used to feed lots of pigeons, pigeons which came from just about anywhere. I bought loaves and loaves of bread just to feed them! Guess I was fascinated with animals and birds in particular when I was 12 so I fed them to observe them. I aspired to be an ornithologist! :P My parents were none too pleased with the whole idea as pigeons = loads of bird crap but they put up with it for quite some time (surprisingly).

First it started with just one, a curious little brown colored pigeon, Ned and then his mate, then within the blink of an eye, the flock doubled and tripled, some were so tame that we could feed them by hand or even pick them up! Very soon, more varieties of birds started arriving, from kingfishers, drongos, bul buls to even some wild parakeets once! Oh, how I observed and learnt, it was great fun!

Eventually though, as I decided I would like to pursue Psychology instead, my fascination waned but! I'll always remember a pair I'd fondly referred to as Mr & Mrs Byrd (with the Upper Case) Lols* They were the most curious but most snooty pair of pigeons I've ever seen. Not only did they refuse to grab the bread pieces the others were squabbling for, they stayed calmly at the edge of the flock, waiting for me to throw some their way!

The best part is that after some time, they decided it was time to make friends so they took to pecking out of my hand :) so in memory of such an audacious pair, I've done up a new batch of patterns.

Raindew birds

Finally!! It has taken me a total of 3 hours to save this new batch of patterns in jpeg format. Jpegs alone, can you imagine that! My illustrator quit on me 18 times... grrrr..... I had to figure out how to outsmart it.

So yes! This month's new theme is birds & its also a theme I've been longing to work on ;) I've been doing little bird patterns here and there, so its nice to finally be able to work on a whole bird theme by itself. loves*

Here's my first pattern of the birds theme: Raindew birds, hope you guys like it! Of the three, i adore the first version, Raindew birds (happy) as the colors resonate with how I'm feeling now! :D Which ones do you guys prefer?
